Now here is the surprise. For easy movement of motor vehicles across country borders, a Carnet is recommended. It is like a passport for the bike, a guarantee to local authorities that you will not illegally sell the bike in their country, or get up to any trouble whatsoever. Because if you do, and they don't stamp your Carnet in and out of the country, you lose your Carnet deposit. Guess what the deposit is, per bike? The cost, which you don't get back, is just over R 6000 per bike, but the deposit, which you do get back if all the stamps are in place, is R 511 000 PER BIKE! Apparently one can do it without the Carnet, but this requires some hustling and 'creative tipping' along the way...;-)
